Daryl Dike substituted off with apparent injury

Saturday marked the latest frustrating moment for American forward Daryl Dike.

Dike was substituted off only 10 minutes after entering the pitch during West Bromwich Albion’s 2-2 EFL Championship draw with Ipswich Town on Saturday. The U.S. men’s national team attacker entered the Portman Road pitch in the 55th minute but was carted off in the 65th minute with a new apparent injury.

“It’s different with Daryl Dike because that one looks more like a serious injury,” manager Carlos Corberan said postmatch about Dike and Kyle Bartley’s injuries. “Something similar to the previous one, but we still don’t know.

“We are going to have to wait for the scan,” he added. “We need to see if the scans show any type of serious injury. It looks like a serious one.”

Dike missed majority of the first half of the current campaign due to an Achilles injury, which he suffered last April. The former Orlando City and Barnsley striker made his season debut on January 7 against Aldershot Town in FA Cup play, scoring once before being substituted off at halftime.

Injuries have certainly plagued Dike’s West Brom career, reducing him to only 32 appearances over two-and-a-half seasons. He has scored eight goals in that time, with majority of those contributions coming from January-March 2023.

Dike has logged 94 combined appearances in his club career to date, as well as earned 10 caps with the USMNT. After making his USMNT debut in February 2021, Dike has not featured since March 2023 during Anthony Hudson’s reign as interim head coach.

West Brom will hope Dike’s injury is not serious as it pushes for English Premier League promotion. Carlos Corberan’s squad sit fifth in the league table with 16 matches to play.

    • He didn’t have a major injury problem when he was in the MLS. Over usage of a player, bringing players back to soon from injury have more to do with injury than someone being injury prone or snake bit.

    • Guy definitely does seem snakebit.

Any sports-medicine person will tell you the thing that sets you up for future injury is previous injury. That vicious cycle of heal-rehab-and-right-down-again definitely seems to be haunting him right now.

You definitely feel for the guy. This is probably the single most unfair aspect of sports.
