Jonathan Gomez is on his way to Greece.
Gomez has joined Super League side PAOK Salonika in a permanent transfer from Real Sociedad, both clubs announced. The 20-year-old signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with PAOK Salonika, which runs through June 2027.
Gomez originally came up through the FC Dallas academy before joining USL side Louisville City in 2020. The young left back registered two goals and 10 assists in 39 appearances in the USL before eventually moving to Real Sociedad in 2022.
Gomez never made his first team debut with Real Sociedad, but did feature heavily for their B team (43 appearances, one goal, and one assist). He also spent last season on loan with second-tier side CD Mirandes, logging 39 appearances and over 3,000 minutes of playing time.
Born in Texas, Gomez featured for both Mexico and the United States at the youth national team level. He made his senior USMNT debut in December 2021 before also debuting for El Tri in April 2022.
The reigning Greek champions are currently in Europa League qualifying this summer after defeating Shamrock Rovers 4-0 on Thursday in first leg playoff action.
Gomez could make his club debut on Sunday against Panetolikos in Super League play.
The few times that Americans have gone to the Greek league in the past, they have tended to slide into obscurity. Palmer-Brown started consistently for 3 seasons in France and then transferred to Panthanaikos last year. He hardly played last season. I think Gomez should have tried elsewhere.
Transfermkt still lists Erik Palmer Brown as injured with “bone marrow swelling”.
Gary,
So few Americans have gone to the Greek league which means you have an almost zero sample size. In that case it does not make a lot of sense to issue a blanket ban on the league. As JR says EPB has a very strange weird and terrifying injury which sounds to me like it might be career if not life threatening.
I don’t know if you can blame that on the Greek league.
I finally found an update on a Kansas City soccer website. It sounds like he’s back in training but he is not on their Europa League roster so either he’s still in for more recovery or they’re moving on. At least it doesn’t sound like it was tumor which can cause bone marrow edema.
