Daryl Dike’s long and excruciating fight back to full fitness is nearing its conclusion.
Dike is back training ahead of a return to action with EFL Championship side West Bromwich Albion, manager Tony Mowbray confirmed to reporters Friday. The American striker suffered a setback in his previous recovery last November, which forced him to the sidelines for the busy Christmas period.
He previously suffered a ruptured Achilles in February 2024, which cost him to miss the second half of West Brom’s league campaign, the summer international window, and the first half of the current season.
However, after a long fight to get back to his best, Dike now looks set for his return in February.
“He’s on the grass,” Mowbray said in a press conference Friday, transcribed by the Birmingham Mail. “The sports science department still pull him out of sessions when they think he’s done enough. They all have these monitors and when he hits a certain number, his session is finished. Any more might put him in jeopardy. He gets a bit frustrated because he wants to keep going, but the bottom line is I bow to the scientists, really.
“This week this is your load, next week we’ll increase it and then the week after, you’re free to go and you have to get in the team,” Mowbray added. “There is a plan for what he needs to do at the moment, which is a bit frustrating for him because he is thinking he wants to get out there and train like everybody else. Of course, we don’t want him to break down.”
Multiple injuries have plagued Dike’s time at West Brom, reducing him to only 32 combined appearances since joining from Orlando City in January 2022. He’s scored eight goals over that span but missed ample time for both club and country.
West Brom sits seventh in the EFL Championship standings and next host Portsmouth at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

Big love Dike and hoping for nothing but the best. Been a tough fight for him.
Manager: “He’s on the grass.” Baby steps indeed.
I for one am looking forward to Dike playing again and hopefully show what he’s capable of as a USMNT prospect.
I hope he can get past the injuries and flourish again.
