Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: McKennie, Richards, and more

Weston McKennie endured a tough international window with the U.S. men’s national team but delivered a positive return back to club action with Juventus on Saturday.

McKennie played 90 minutes in the Bianconeri’s 1-0 Serie A victory over Genoa. The USMNT midfielder showed positive moments throughout the match, winning seven duels, making four defensive recoveries, and drawing one foul.

Kenan Yildiz’s first half goal proved to be enough for Juventus despite them letting Genoa hang around for most of the match.

Fellow USMNT teammate Tim Weah featured off of the bench in the second half as Juventus moved to fifth place in the league table. McKennie has now made 36 appearances across all competitions this season.

Juventus will continue league play on April 6 at AS Roma.

  1. Is anyone else worried about the recent stretch of form by Pulisic? He wasn’t great in either Nations League game. In the recent games I have seen him, he hasn’t been terrible, but he hasn’t been world class – like he was earlier in the season.

Is he just getting worn down? Is he getting marked out of Serie A games? Any thoughts?

    • In the game before the international break he scored 2 for Milan. The Milan coach doesn’t seem like he has settled on his best lineup and I think he sees Pulisic more as a provider than a striker. In the past, Pulisic took penalty kicks but in this last game he didn’t and the penalty was saved, making the difference in the game. As for the team, the manager seems to have a lot of choices and doesn’t seem to know how to put them together. Leao, the Portuguese international, usually starts on the left wing, but not always and in the last game he started on the bench. The coach put Tammy Abraham as a lone striker even though Abraham has spent a lot of time on the bench in the past. Gimenez, the Mexican striker, was brought in over the January transfer window, scored in his first game and then was featured, until this weekend. I don’t know if he was injured since I watched the game on a Spanish language broadcast. In general, the manager doesn’t seem to have settled on a steady lineup and, considering, it is probably good that Pulisic at least keeps starting.
