Two U.S. men’s national team players lifted England’s oldest trophy on Saturday.
Chris Richards and Matt Turner both celebrated as Crystal Palace defeated Manchester City 1-0 in the 2024-25 FA Cup Final. Richards started and played 90 minutes in the match at Wembley Stadium, helping the Eagles lift their first trophy in club history.
Eberechi Eze’s 16th minute opener was the lone goal of the match as the England international finished off Daniel Munoz’s cross.
Omar Marmoush had a golden chance to tie the match in the 36th minute but saw his penalty kick effort saved by Dean Henderson.
Henderson would earn Man of the Match honors, making six saves on the day.
Richards won five duels, made 12 clearances, and two defensive recoveries as Oliver Glasner’s men pulled a famous FA Cup shock.
The result not only guarantees Palace’s spot in the 2025-26 UEFA Europa League but also into August’s FA Community Shield.
Richards and Turner become the first American players to win the FA Cup since Carli Lloyd did so with Manchester City.
Crystal Palace will close its Premier League schedule with final matches against Wolves and Liverpool.
I’m pretty sure Matt Turner was the cup games GK for Palace no? And if he was, it’s borderline shameful he was handed the start for the Final. How do you not reward him for helping get them there? Or, is there an injury I don’t know about?
He played the first three rounds against lower division teams. Henderson played the quarters, semis, and finals.
Oh ok, well I stand corrected! Although I will say that in recent memory I recall a lot Prem teams allowing their backup GK to handle all cup games, regardless of the stage of the competition. At the end of the day Turner needs to find a team where he’s an everyday starter with the World Cup fast approaching, otherwise he’ll find himself a backup or at worst not on the final roster
Looking at the 7 EPL teams that made the quarterfinals only Man City used a backup in the quarters on ward. I’d guess the lower table teams used their starters trying to get some silverware and bigger clubs like Man City used backups for rest.
shameful?
How does that work?
Palace owe Turner jackshit.
They play him in these games to give him a chance to stay sharp should anything happen to Henderson. It’s good for Turner and it’s good for Palace .
If they are now playing Henderson , it’s because they now are at the point where they have a chance to make something happen and are making more of an effort.
But don’t give us this lie that Turner is doing Palace a big favor.
If FA cup games are beneath him, then Palace will release him, send him back to Forest, whatever, and find some other keeper who is more self aware and more professional.
Once he proves that he is actually a real live #1 somewhere then he can start with the attitude. Until then he should just shut the fuck up; learn how to kick a ball and play better.
